What is National Recovery Month?
National Recovery Month is held every September to celebrate the nation’s strong and proud recovery community! It’s a time to spread hope that recovery is possible by raising awareness about mental health and substance use disorders, celebrating the journey of recovery, and promoting the importance of accessible treatment and support systems.
Since 1989, this month has also served as a time for individuals, communities, and organizations to unite to destigmatize these issues, honor the resilience of those in recovery, and emphasize the positive impact that comprehensive treatment can have on individuals and their families’ lives.
In addition to National Recovery Month, International Recovery Day is celebrated on September 30th to recognize globally that recovery is possible and there is hope in a new life after addiction.
Why We Celebrate Recovery
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in seven Americans report experiencing a substance use disorder. It’s important to note there’s not one single driving factor that leads to addiction. Some people may use drugs to help cope with stress, and trauma, or to help with mental health issues.
At Seven Counties Services, we know that recovery is possible! Realizing the need for help to overcome an addiction is the first step in a journey to sobriety, and we offer services throughout that entire continuum. From medical detoxification to long-term supportive housing, our dedicated staff provides services and support to help those who need us to live their best life, substance-free.
Get Involved
In 2022, 107,699 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States. Of those, 2,262 were in Kentucky, and 609, or 26.5%, were in Jefferson County. This data resulted in Jefferson County ranking 6th in the nation for the highest overdose death rate at 77.6 per 100,000 people. That’s compared to the overall United States rate of 32.3.
Although this data is staggering, we know the fight is not hopeless. Substance misuse comes in many shapes and forms and affects individuals of all ages, genders, races, and backgrounds. We must continue to raise awareness, break the stigma around addiction recovery, and support those on their journey.
This National Recovery Month, Seven Counties Services will be doing just that and celebrating stories of success through our Faces of Recovery campaign and our annual Stand Up for Recovery! event.
Faces of Recovery will highlight individuals who have overcome addiction with the help of Seven Counties Services. You’ll be able to witness these powerful testimonies on our social platforms all month long.
Stand Up for Recovery! is an in-person celebration of those who have also overcome their struggles with addiction with help from Seven Counties Services. On September 28 from 12 PM to 1 PM at the Hyatt Regency Louisville, guests are invited to join us for a wonderful lunch and hear guest speakers share uplifting and inspirational testimonials of addiction recovery and how our community can join together and Stand Up for Recovery!
